Insect Katta


 

The moths of this family  Saturniidae are commonly called as silk moths. The tasar silkworm Antheraea mylitta is the non mulberry silk which is cultivated in the tropical forest of India. Silkworm is a polyphagous insect and is reared under natural condition.

Length - 40-50 mm.

Distribution -India, Nepal, Sri Lanka

Genus - Antheraea Hubner 

Species - A. mylitta Drury 


Body thick bristly with thin dark bands running across  the body. Antenna pectinate type. Female moths are  yellow in colour. Two big ocellated spots on wing. Female usually larger than male. Male moths are yellowish brown provided with grey colour.
